With gas prices pushing ever higher most of us are looking for ways to increase our gas mileage. You will have heard of terms like hypermiling and water4gas but really the simplest thing you can do to increase your gas mileage is to change your driving habits.
Here are some free tips to increase your gas mileage immediately, no matter what kind of car you drive.
1. Keep to the speed limit. Actually its better to drive below the speed limit, in most modern cars the optimum speed is around 40 mph as wind resistance becomes a major factor.
2. Dont accelerate or brake hard. Remember, your car burns extra gas when accelerating and whats the point of burning all that gas just to brake hard and lose all of the energy when you get to the next junction.
3. Buy a GPS - taking the optimum route for your journey will save more money on gas than the GPS unit costs over the life of the car, and the wife and kids wont be shouting at you for getting lost!
4. Check your tire pressures regularly and make sure your car has regular services. One of the best ways to increase your gas mileage is to ensure that your tires are not worn, (this is also essential for road safety) and they are inflated to the correct pressure. Under inflated tires cause extra drag and just eat up that extra gas. Have your wheel alignment and shocks checked - these two factors will significantly affect your gas mileage, especially at higher speeds. Make sure your air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs and engine tuning are all carried out at recommended service intervals - remember a healthy engine is a lean engine.
5. Don’t run unnecessary electrical services. Switch off your air conditioning - this really guzzles the gas. Only use your headlights if you need them - Volvo drivers are excused on this one. Basically, every electrical service ultimately gets its power from your gas, and burning gas to keep you comfortable has a very bad effect on your gas mileage.
6. Keep your windows up. Open windows cause wind resistance, reducing your gas mileage by 10%. The only exception to this is when its unbearably hot as its actually still more efficient to keep your windows down that to run your air conditioning.
7. Share your car. Bit obvious this one but many people never even consider it. You can increase your gas mileage by 50% when car sharing with your workmate on alternate weeks, for example.

Save Money on Gas and Auto Repair - By Not Topping Off At the Pump!
By Christopher Chism
As rising gas prices seem to show no sign of letting up any time soon, you could actually be your own worst enemy, adding fuel to the fire, by overfilling your tank!
Have you ever found yourself at the gas pump trying to fill your gas tank up with an unreasonable amount of fuel? Have you ever thought, “If I can just squeeze 25 more cents into this tank I will not have to fill up for another ¼ of a mile”?
The truth is, there are many risks, and factors to take into consideration, when overfilling your tank. The parts of your fuel system that are supposed to be soaking in gas 24-7 are designed and formulated to do their job for years. But the parts that aren’t supposed to soak in it - things like your fuel filler tube or the rubber seal where the filler meets the chassis - can suffer from continual saturation.
Those things were not made to be soaked in fuel on a continual basis, and if one of those parts is damaged, you could be shelling out some serious cash in auto-repair bills.
We have been told for years, that if we don’t fill - up, we will leave more air space for the gas to evaporate. With that in mind, ignorantly people will top off their tanks, sometimes causing more damage than good.
I actually have a friend who can never seem to fill his tank, without somehow wasting it on his hands, clothes, or shoes. So, while he thinks that he is saving money by topping off, he is actually wasting gasoline, harming his clothes, and possibly even damaging his vehicle.
And if you are one of these “save the earth” types, think about all the pollution from the wasted fumes floating up into the atmosphere when it is spewing from your tank. Gasoline vapors contribute to bad ozone days and are a source of toxic air pollutants such as benzene.
Vapor recovery systems on gasoline pumps are designed to prevent vapors from escaping into the air. Continuing to pump gas after the automatic shutoff can damage this system, and result in gasoline spills.
The bottom line is this. When you are at the pump and the nozzle clicks, causing the pump to stop, hang it up. Anything more that you decide to squeeze in is not even going into your tank, causing you to pay for pollution and possible future auto repair!

I don’t know about you but the pumps I use to fill my tank start cutting out after 2 pints never mind 2 gallons. But point taken. I have started to only have fill my tank and visit the petrol sation twice rather than carry the extra weight of a full tank about.
